    GeoSay: A Geometric Saliency for Extracting Buildings in Remote Sensing Images

    Automatic extraction of buildings in remote sensing images is an important but challenging task and finds many applications in different fields such as urban planning, navigation and so on. This paper addresses the problem of buildings extraction in very high-spatial-resolution (VHSR) remote sensing (RS) images, whose spatial resolution is often up to half meters and provides rich information about buildings. Based on the observation that buildings in VHSR-RS images are always more distinguishable in geometry than in texture or spectral domain, this paper proposes a geometric building index (GBI) for accurate building extraction, by computing the geometric saliency from VHSR-RS images. More precisely, given an image, the geometric saliency is derived from a mid-level geometric representations based on meaningful junctions that can locally describe geometrical structures of images. The resulting GBI is finally measured by integrating the derived geometric saliency of buildings. Experiments on three public and commonly used datasets demonstrate that the proposed GBI achieves the state-of-the-art performance and shows impressive generalization capability. Additionally, GBI preserves both the exact position and accurate shape of single buildings compared to existing methods

    A Practical Localization Algorithm Based on Wireless Sensor Networks

    Many localization algorithms and systems have been developed by means of wireless sensor networks for both indoor and outdoor environments. To achieve higher localization accuracy, extra hardware equipments are utilized by most of the existing localization algorithms, which increase the cost and greatly limit the range of location-based applications. In this paper we present a method which can effectively meet different localization accuracy requirements of most indoor and outdoor location services in realistic applications. Our algorithm is composed of two phases: partition phase, in which the target region is split into small grids and localization refinement phase in which a higher accuracy location can be generated by applying a trick algorithm. A realistic demo system using our algorithm has been developed to illustrate its feasibility and availability.     Case report: A novel heterozygous frameshift mutation of ACAN in a Chinese family with short stature and advanced bone age

    Short stature (OMIM: 165800) is a common pediatric disorder. Any abnormality in the cartilage formation of the growth plate can cause short stature. Aggrecan, encoded by ACAN, is an important component of the extracellular matrix. Mutations in ACAN have been reported to cause short stature. In the present study, we enrolled a Chinese family with short stature and advanced bone age across three generations. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed on the proband to detect the candidate genes causing short stature in family. A novel heterozygous frameshift mutation (NM_013227.3:c.7230delT; NP_001356197.1: p. Phe2410Leufs*9) of the ACAN gene was confirmed to be a genetic lesion in this family. This variant, which was located in a functional site globular 3 (G3) domain of ACAN and predicted to be deleterious by informatics programs, was co-segregated with the affected family members by performing Sanger sequencing. Literatures review of growth hormone (GH) treatment outcome of all previously reported ACAN patients suggesting that the G3 domain of ACAN may be critical in the development of short stature and growth hormone treatment. These findings not only contribute to the genetic diagnosis and counseling of the family, but will also expand the mutation spectrum of ACAN

    Effects of a Chinese Medicinal Plant Radix Astragali on the Ovariectomized Female Rats

    Perimenopausal syndrome occurs during the transition to menopause. Complementary and alternative medicine, especially Chinese medicinal plants, has manifested significant effects in alleviating perimenopausal symptoms. However, little research has been focused on the effects of Chinese medicinal plant on the immune function of the perimenopausal women. The present study aimed to explore the effects of Radix Astragali (RA) on the sex hormone levels and the interleukins of the ovariectomized female rats. 24 female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into model control group (MOD group), sham-operation group (SHAM group), RA group and estrogen group (EST group). After all the treatment ended, the serum levels of estradiol (E2), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), interleukin-2 (IL-2), and interleukin-8 (IL-8) were measured using enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA) and the uterus was removed and weighed after blood exsanguinations immediately. In the MOD group, the serum levels of E2 were significantly lower, and the serum levels of FSH and LH were markedly higher than those of the RA group, EST group and SHAM group (P<0.05). In the RA group, the serum levels of E2 were significantly lower, and the serum levels of FSH were markedly higher than those of the SHAM group and EST group, respectively. In the MOD group, the serum levels of IL-2 and IL-8 were significantly lower than those of the RA group, EST group and SHAM group (P<0.05), and no marked differences existed among RA group, EST group and SHAM group in the serum levels of IL-2 and IL-8 (P>0.05). The uterine weight of the rats in the RA group, EST group and SHAM group were significantly higher than those of the rats in MOD group (P<0.05). There were no marked differences among the rats from RA group, EST group and SHAM group on the uterine weight (P>0.05). It is concluded that RA can significantly improve the immune functions of the ovariectomized female rats, although it cannot change the sex hormones levels as significantly as estrogen
